YPI Charter Schools
YPI’s Bert Corona Charter School and Monseñor Oscar
Romero Charter Middle School exemplify YPI's efforts to bring educational resources to low income families. Serving the Pacoima and Pico Union/Westlake communities
of Los Angeles where many public schools are overcrowded and underperform on state achievement measures, the schools prepare students for academic success and active
community participation.
- Bert Corona Charter
School serves 359 students in grades 6 - 8. Opened in September
2004, the school is named in honor of the Latino activist and
organizer who worked for decades to bring justice to immigrant
families in California and nationwide. Bert Corona Charter
School is located in the community of Pacoima and provides
clear and high expectations for all students to achieve, a
personalized and supportive learning environment that recognizes
students’ accomplishments, family-school-community
partnerships and service, and integrated technology in the
classroom.
- Monseñor Oscar Romero Charter Middle School opened in September 2007 in the Pico Union/Westlake community of Los Angeles and is named in honor of Monseñor
Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador assassinated
in 1981 and renowned as a fearless defender of the poor during
El Salvador’s civil war. The school offers students a culturally enriched curriculum that targets academic achievement while partnering with parents and
community members. As with Bert Corona Charter School, Monseñor
Oscar Romero Charter School is a community hub that offers wrap-around
services that include adult education, afterschool programs, health
and legal services, and civic activities.
